Microsoft Outlook won't import mail and addresses from Outlook Exp

P

pboro_trevor

I have purchased a brand new, off the shelf PC running Windows Vista Home
Premium

I am attempting to import my mail, folders and address book from my old
Windows XP Pro PC. I exported the mail, folder and address book from Outlook
Express 6 using the export function to a folder called mail.

I transferred that folder, via USB stick to the Desktop on my new PC.

I then attempted to import those mails, folders and address into Microsoft
Outlook 2003, on the new PC. I follow the instructions using the import tool,
and eventually highlight the mail folder. I click Ok and immediately get the
following message - 'The mail folder could not be opened. If another
application is using this file, please close it and try again'. Ther are no
other applications running.

I have disabled Windows Defender and User Access Control, to no avail.

Help!!

Ok sorry, but still the same answer ;-)

You'll first need to configure your Outlook Express dbx-files with Windows
Mail (successor of Outlook Express) on your new computer. Once you've done
that, you can choose Export from within WM to bring over your messages to
Outlook.

That was me. I loaded Windows Mail and when I try to import mail, the prompt
is from "OE6 store directory" select the location of email messages. I
navigate to the USB drive but no files are there to import. Outside of the
program I have checked the USB repeatedly and there are three .dbx files.

Weezie,
You can not import the messages from the USB drive, into OE or WM. You will
need to first copy the *.DBX files from the USB drive, onto your hard drive.
Create a folder and copy them to it. Then Right click the folder> Select
Properties> and clear the Read-Only Attribute's box. Then try the import the
import process. One of the *.dbx file, must be the Folders.DBX file from the
message store. If you did not save that file to the USB drive, you will need
to manually add the messages back.

You need to save your complete OE store to transfer to WM and then to Outlook. That is why you have the issue

Crossposted to
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress newsgroup:

1. You will need to find a PC with a working application of OE6.

2. Then you will need to manually restore the *.DBX files that you have,
after copying it to that HDD from your USB drive, and Right click each *DBX
file, and clear the "Read-Only" attribute from each of them.

3. Then you will need to follow the instructions to restore an individual
*.DBX, for each file one at a time, from the follwing site:
http://oehelp.com/backup.aspx
Importing single dbx files into OE

To backup and restore a single OE5 or 6 mail folder, save the appropriate
dbx file. To restore, create a new folder in OE5 or 6 (call it archiv1, for
example) and access it once. Then close OE and find archiv1.dbx and delete
it. Make a copy of the folder you want to restore and rename it to
archiv1.dbx. Then copy that file into the directory where the previous file
was deleted. Open OE and the messages you wanted to restore will be
accessible via opening that archiv1 folder.

4. When you have the messages restored in the OE6 application, you should
first compact the message store, and then copy the message store, making
sure that you include the Folders.DBX file, to your USB drive.

5. Then only import the messages from the folders that you need, into WM.
You do not have to import the other folders.
