Microsoft Photo Editor

This program was available with Office 97. The feature
that removes backgrounds is what I am looking for on my XP
Professional. Is there a stand alone program that will
edit images to REMOVE background. That is it. Or is the
photo editor available for me to put back onto my new
operating system.

Thanks for the info I really appreciate your help. This
add or remove features - can this be done by going to
control panel - add and remove programs function?

Hi Kristy,

Yes. Use Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel
and choose the Microsoft Office Choice and change the
features installed to add Photo Editor.

Just to be perfectly clear - I AM ONLY Operating under XP
Professional with brand new computer- I did not upgrade
old system that included the Photo Editor. I am not at my
computer now but are you saying that the Photo Editor IS
included with the XP I just need to activate/ install it?
Thanks for your help.

A problem with MS naming both Office and Windows "XP" is that I'm not sure
WHICH product people are talking about unless they're explicit. ;-)
(Another problem is that people think they need Windows XP in order to
install Office XP, which isn't the case).

If you have Office XP, then yes, MS Photo Editor does come with it. In Add
or Remove... navigate to Office Tools, and set it to "Run from my computer".
You will not need to activate it (if you have Office XP, you very likely
have already activated, which covers all of the Office XP components).

If all you have is Windows XP, and no version of Office (XP, 2000, or other
versions that included Photo Editor), then you're out of luck.

I can't think of anything as economical as MS Photo Editor for removing
backgrounds. Msft's discontinued PhotoDraw does it, as does PhotoShop.
However, one isn't available anymore, and the other is rather pricy (about
$700 retail for PhotoShop 7)... unless you need it otherwise and can justify
the expense.

But, MS PhotoEditor *is* included with Office XP, so you have it... and I'm
sure you'll see it when you go into the Add/Remove facility.

PhotoShop Elements is fairly cheap and even comes as part of the package
with some scanners.
