Microsoft Photo Editor

Randy

Hello--I use Windows 98--I prefer to open JPG's with
Microsoft PhotoEditor 3--I was setup to just double click
the JPG and the Microsoft PhotoEditor would open and
immediately open the selected JPG--all automatically. All
of a sudden my Photo Editor Program would not open JPG's
within my file folder titled Digital Picutres--it would
open the Photo Editor Program, but stop there. I have
figured out that if I title a folder with a space in the
title it prevents Microsoft Photo Editor from opening
JPG's located within that folder. This just started
happening to me about 2 weeks ago. Prior to that I had no
problems. My current workaround is to remove the space in
several of my picture related folder titles or just title
the folders with only one word. Does anybody know why
this may have happened to me all of a sudden and how to
fix it? OK Thank You

Hi, Randy.

Open up My Computer. Click Folder Options from the View menu, a window
with tabs will open. Select the File Types tab (by clicking on it),
there you will see a large list of all kinds of different file type
descriptions.

Click into the list, press J on your keyboard. The most likely file type
description for a .jpg image would be JPEG image, otherwise you will
have to look through all file types that have JPG and/or JPEG as
Extension in File type details below.

Just in case, see that the file type's Opens with: program is PHOTOED
(Photo Editor).
Select the JPG file type that you found (click on it once), click the
Edit button, you will get the Edit File Type window (or dialog, whatever
you call it).

In the Actions list, there is the open command. Select that command
(click on it), click the Edit... button, you will get an "Editing action
for type: JPEG Image" dialog (the type name should probably be JPEG
Image).

If there's a check on Use DDE (the window is then bigger), you might
like to write down what is written there in a text file, where the
information is and how it can be reached and then uncheck the Use DDE
check box.

In the text field titled Application to perform action should be
something like this:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\PHOTOED\PhotoEd.exe
-- it's an address for the Photo Editor program, in some cases long
directory names might be abbreviated with a tilde ~ and a number. If
long directory names are not abbreviated, then try to make sure the
following:

* that the address for the Photo Editor program looks like this:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\PHOTOED\PhotoEd.exe"
You have to see to it that the program's address is between normal
quotes (not smart quotes).

To the same line, add a space, write "%1"
In the text field, it should look like this:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\PHOTOED\PhotoEd.exe"
"%1"

Click OK in the Edit action for type: JPEG Image window.

In the Edit File Type window, see that the Always show extension check
box is checked, this will help you to more easily identify JPEG image
files.
Click OK in the Edit File Type window.
Click OK in the Folder Options window.

Rename some directory so that it would contain a space, put a JPEG image
in it, try to open it and see what happens.

I hope that would help.

-Mart.
