We are evaluating the possiblity of utilizing MP for tracking, consolidating
and improving our ability to manage federal grants, private grants and
non-grant funds. Is this product appropriate for this?

All depends on how you deal with your data and what you expect as output
from the program. Can you conceive of the process as emulating a
project, e.g. deliverables, logical connections, activities with
start/end, etc. Have you tried and what was the result of the experiment?

Project is not an accounting system. Project is a schedule calculation
engine on top of a schedule/planning database with an end-user front-end
to interact with that data and control the schedule computations.

I would say no - PRoject is not a financial program, it is a work scheduling
program designed to help you get the right resources into the right places
at the right times to get a certain job accomplished. While it does have
cost estimating and tracking abilities, that's not its primary role.
