Yes, you can install your projectServer datbase on a SQL 2005 platform.
You can also leverage the Analysis Services in 2005 to build your cubes.
You can also leverage SQL Reporting Services for dynamic reporting.

I actually embedded the SQl REporting services web portal into PWA to allow
my users a single point of entry.
