Hi Shane
as project is a scheduling tool, the times tasks are performed are generally
determined by the project's working time, the relationship between tasks and
the assigned resource's availability. So if you're scheduling from a start
date and tell project that you can "wax the widgets" only after you have
"sanded the widgets" then project will schedule the starting time of "waxing
the widgets" after the end of the "sanding the widgets" and this is
(generally) how tasks get their starting times.
There are ways to "over-ride" project's scheduling of tasks but these should
be used sparingly ... two methods of doing this are:
1) you can use constraints if you want to specify both a day and a time
(double click on the task, go to the advance tab - choose the constraint
type and the set the date - choose from the drop down box, leave a space and
type the time in e.g.
1/1/05 2:00pm)
2) or if you only want to specify a time rather than a date, if you're using
project 2000 or later, you can create a new calendar and assign it to the
task -
to create a calendar, choose tools /change working time and click the NEW
button
to assign it to a task, double click on the task, go to the advanced tab and
choose the calendar from the drop down list.
I also recommend that you have a read of the series of project articles
written by Mike Glen which can be found at
