Microsoft Publisher 2007 Pic Not Showing?? HELP! ?

R

RobbyL

I have a 2 park question.

Question 1: I'm making changes to my webpage with MSP 2007 which I had used
to make this page. There is one picture that I want to change which I did,
but when I view it as a webpage (File, Web Page Preview) I don't see the
picture, that space is blank. When I put the old picture back and then view
as a webpage that older picture is there. Why will the new picture not show?
It's the same type of file (.jpg)

Questions 2: There is another picture I've replaced. When I veiw my page as
a webpage (File, Webpage Preview) it's there to see. BUT when I post it to my
server the picture is not there and yes, I've uploaded the picture to my
server. Im so confused. :\

Also, some people who use IE tell me that sometimes they don't see all of
the pictures, but if they use something other then IE they can see it.
Strange?

Are you saying the the the embedded picture on the webpage itself is not
there?
When you say that you uploaded the picture to the server I get the
impression that you are linking to a jpg file. Am I correct?
Post the URL and we will take a look at it.
What hosting service are you using?

Yes, I've embedded (didn't link) the picture but it's not there when I upload
the page to my host. I've uploaded the picture itself to my domain via
filezilla so it should show. Below is the url to my website. You'll see a
blank space on the lower right hand side of the center picture.

You don't upload just the single picture.

After you make any change to the Publisher file, then Publish to the Web and
produce a new set of web files. Assuming you don't change the default, you
will get an index.htm file (your home page) and an index_file folder that
contains all your pictures, supporting graphics and the other pages of your
site. Publisher makes one or more copies of every image you insert/embed
during the publishing process. You want to upload them all. Upload the new
index.htm file and the index_files folder intact...don't just upload
individual files.

Before you do, you also should compress the pictures you are using. They
take forever to load. You can reduce the file size and increase the loading
speed:

Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages (2003):

Thank you both for your replies. Yes I had uploaded the new index.htm (my
home page) file to the web. I'll need to go and take a closer look at what I
did. Other things on the page changed just as I wanted them to, but it's just
that one picture. When you click on the space where it should be the link is
there.

Thanks for the links about compressing my pictures. I know that the page
takes forever the first time it loads. I did compress the pictures when I
made the page, but there must be something I'm doing wrong. I'll take look at
your links.

Sorry I was not more clear. Upload the "index_files" folder too! That folder
contains your picture.

Also, after I looked at you site again today, I noticed some png file
images. Go to tools > Options > Web tab and uncheck the "Allow png..."
option. That will probably improve the loading speed. Republish.

Good news. Thanks for letting us know.

If I may make a suggestion. You can improve the look of your background, and
speed up the loading speed of each page significantly, by making a couple
changes.

You are using a vertical bar(s) for a background:
http://www.osmondheaven.com/index_files/image334.gif
You see this as the page is loading, but it is mostly covered by the time
the whole page loads. Only a small strip is visible at the bottom of the
page. Most of the page is covered with multiple versions of groups of three
pictures, of who I assume are the matriarch and patriarch of the family. For
example: http://www.osmondheaven.com/index_files/image2951.jpg .

There is a better way to build your background I believe.

If you don't have a single image of the couple in the background, then here
is a link to one that I made up on impulse:
http://www.yousendit.com/download/Y2ovQ1ZsaTF6RS92Wmc9PQ
This will take you to yousendit.com which is a free file transfer service.
There will be a download link for the file which is 2.47 kb. I did a fast
job of trying to optimize the size of the file for the background. Anyway,
save the file to somewhere on your computer where you can find it. You don't
have to sign up for anything to use the service.

Backup your file.

Then delete all the original images of the couple that you have spread out
over your page, leaving the striped background visible (Whew...makes me
dizzy!). Then go to Format > Background > More backgrounds > Picture tab >
Select picture > and browse to where you saved the single copy of the
couple...ok out.

Now the whole background is covered with the tiled picture of the couple.
Much cleaner, and faster loading. Don't forget that Publisher will
automatically truncate the page right after the design element on the page
when you produce your web files, so don't worry about your Pub page being
longer than your content.

If you don't like it better, you can always go back to your copy.

Any kind of suggestions are greatly appreciated. I went ahead and did what
you said and everything seems to have worked out just fine. The background
has been added like you suggested. With all of this help I'm sure the page
will load so much faster for fans when they visit. Unfortunately I did loose
the vertical lines on the edges but that's okay. I'm just happy we got the
page loading quickly. This was my first time working with Microsoft Publisher
so there is a lot I still need to learn. You have made it so that I
understood how to change things for the better. Unlike going to other sites
that explain things and you still don't understand what they mean. You kept
it simple. You were very helpful. I'm so glad I found this site! Keep up the
great work!

Thanks for the kind words. You made my day.

I looked at your site again, and it does load more quickly, and I don't get
vertigo looking at those vertical lines while I wait for the couple images
to load. Remember the background is supposed to be just
that...background...unobtrusive and not the focus of the page. I think you
have accomplished that now.

Please post back if you have other issues.

Now that you have done all that work and are happy with your creation I
would suggest that you back up what you did. I would hate to see a post
from you in the future about how to recover a web site because the publisher
file crashed or the computer crashed and I lost all my files. We see such
comments on here now and then. I am a big fan of putting the finished
publisher file on the server that has your web site. Those files are backed
up regularly. My self I create a folder on the server such as Pub_Files
My_Files etc. and ftp the publisher file there.

My two cents
