Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

W

wurly

I just purchased a 2007 Publisher, installed it on my laptop and fo
some reason I'm unable to open any files I create. It keeps giving m
the error message 'Publisher cannot open the file'. I've never had thi
problem before with any other software and don't know whether it's som
setting on my laptop that needs adjusting or what...it's really bizarre

J

JoAnn Paules

Which version of Publisher did you create those files with?

Are you trying to open them across a network?

W

wurly

It's a brand new 2007 version....it was installed successfully an
activated. I created a file - saved and then when I try to go back t
reopen the file it then gives me the error message. Do you think thi
is a software issue or something to do with my laptop itself

M

MarkInAtlanta

I am currently having the same issue. the interesting thing is half th
users in my group have the problem, half of them don't. But it jus
started and it affected all of the ones having the issue at the sam
time. Perhaps a MS update gone wrong

S

smackjack3

I've tried to download the hotfix, but Microsoft sends the URL t
download the fix in an email and the link in the email is broken... an
other suggestions? I've read other places that it's due to MS offic
SP2... the files are stored on a network drive, but they will open fin
on a computer that doesn't have SP2

J

JoAnn Paules

Exactly - when SP2 is installed on a computer, it can no longer open the
files.

I wonder if the link is really broken. Why do you say that? What happens
when you click on it?

JoAnn,

That hotfix is getting installed correctly on our systems, but we are still
getting that message on some. Is there a subsequent hotfix I should look
for?

Thanks,

Tom

That's the only one I know of. Have you checked to see what's different on
the systems that get it and those that don't?

Actually, I'm finding some files created in Pub2003 open in Pub2007 after
patching and others don't - on the same system. I just tested that on my
system. The files still do open in 2003, though.

Are these local files or on a network?

KB928890 didn't help either.

It doesn't matter if the files are on a share of on my desktop, they fail
either way.

Thanks,

Having the same issue here on a Publisher 2007 install. Fully up to
date w/ hotfix included....tried registry workaround (KB928890) as
well. Publisher files open fine on a vanilla load of Publisher 2007
pre-updates.

M

maimer

I also am receiving the same error message. I have Office 2007 SP2
12.06425.1000 with Hotfix KB972566 installed and have also applied the
registry changes from KB928890.

I have confirmed that the file is still valid by opening it on another
system without Office SP2.

This is completely ridiculous. I posted on 8/5 and shortly thereafter saw
something that suggested to uninstall the Publisher security update. I do a
monthly newsletter and uninstalling the update worked three months in a row.
Now nothing! I emailed it to my laptop, which runs on Vista. It opened, but
it was a version from April, even though it was updated and saved in October.
!!??!!

I have tried installing two different hotfixes (KB972566 and 976177) and
maybe even a third mentioned somewhere else. I tried the registry fix as
well. My only guess is that it's the SP2 update, although I can't explain
why it worked before when I probably had the update installed back in August.
Nor can I explain why less sophisticated and smaller Publisher files still
open fine.

I tried the SP2 uninstall download:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cf-8da5-455d-b3bb-8ff2223f97c4&displaylang=en

Way over my head. Why do I need to be an engineer (or an 'administrator' as
Microsoft calls it) to run software I paid $450 for?

Thoughts, anyone?
