microsoft stopped working starts in safe mode

I am on Vista, and use MSW 2003. Without any obvious reason, while trying to
open MS word one morning, I got the message "MS Word stopped working etc..
When trying again, I got the suggestion to try to start in Safe Mode, which
does work. But I can't get it to open normally. I have done diagnose and
repair, and reinstallation, but no avail.
I read the FAQ, got some suggestion about template corruption, but could not
find a simple pathway to a solution.
Thanks for any help

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm. You may
need to delete or rename the Normal.dot template, or remove an add-in, or
rebuild a registry entry. The article has instructions for all of that.

Hi Terry,

I'm not sure why there hasn't been a redirect page put into place for the link you posted to get to the new version of that FAQ at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm ,
but at present the link you mentioned will give a 404 (page not found) error.

By 'The FAQ, did you mean

Did you rename normal.dot? Did you check your printer driver? Did you look
for add-ins?

Drat, I updated that the other day but it seems to have reverted. Thanks for
pointing this out.

I'll have another go now.
