Microsoft trial version convert to full

I just got through using my free trial for Microsoft office I have
purchased the Microsoft Office Standard 2007. I installed it. But when I
open Word or Excell it says my Trial is almost over and if I want to
convert. So I try to convert and it says my product key is invalid...
The top of the box that I purchased has the words "upgrade". Did I just
waste $250 bucks? Anyone please help...

Yes and no. You can't use a trial version as the qualifying software for an
upgrade.
However all is not lost - all you need to do is to purchase a dead cheap
copy of something that is a qualifying software on EBay.

And you have to uninstall any trial, and reboot prior to installing any paid
for version
