Microsoft Update Hangs

C

Curt in Budapest

I've now got 4 computers in the office that have problems with microsoft
update.
It starts . . . . and it never tells me what needs updating. Usually 15-30
minutes later I need to restart the computer. Only symptom is that it is
using a fair amount of system resources.

The latest problem child is running Word 2003 11.6568.6568) SP2
The previous one happened friday at 4:45 pm with the bosses wife. Outlook
crashed - your error report said that it needed to be updated. I turned on
Microsoft Update - and at 6:45 pm I finally was able to give her back her
computer - still not updated. Yes I am very very very annoyed that this is
happening.

What is the error message generated when this happens. It would greatly help if you can post the error as per verbatim. Koszi

Typeically "Hang" means no error message.
There is no error message in the case
Just the "checking for the latest updates for your computer....."
I've got a brand new dell on my desk to which I've just installed my
seemingly old version of Office 2003. It is now waiting on Microsoft Update
-fourteen minutes and counting on a broadband connection.
Up my total to 5 computers which have exhibited this problem.
Koszi!

I had the same problem with office and I can't get updates either. I don't
get any error message it just uses a huge amount of resources on my laptop
and slows everything up. Can anyone help becuase it's p"ing me off.

Probably svchost consuming 99% CPU resources. Check kb932494. Hotfix 927891
is supposed to fix it (but doesn't on any of the PCs I've installed it on).
Many, many people are reporting this issue, but M$ has utterly failed to
offer a working solution.
