Microsoft Update keeps offering SP3 for Office

R

Roger Vortman

I've seen many messages about this, but no answers.

I have Windows XP Home on my PC, along with Office XP.
When I run "Office Update", it tells me that Office is all updated.
If I go and list what's been applied, it lists SP3, so "Office Update"
is aware that I've installed SP3, and is happy.

However, every time that I run "Microsoft Update", it tells
me that I need to apply SP3 for Office. I can ignore that, however
the worst part is that I used to have Windows set up to tell me
when security updates are available, but had to turn that off since every
5 minutes it told me that I needed to download SP3 for Office.
Then if I click on it, and download and install it again, 5 minutes
later it is telling me that I need SP3 for Office again.

This is beyond annoying, it is just plain broken. I want Windows
to be able to tell me when security updates are available from
"Microsoft Update", but I can't do that until this stupid problem
is fixed.

Any ideas or references on how I can fix this breakage?

Thanks.

I've posted this same problem more than once but without a reply.
It doesn't appear to be an isolated issue so I'm wondering why it's being
ignored? If we are not supplying enough information - then tell us.
If it's because the issue is temporarily solveable by telling the
auto-updater to ignore the download - well, that's not acceptable because
it's not solving the issue!

Come on MVPs - help us out here ... please!!

Peter,

Okay, I downloaded the cleanup utility. However, it doesn't
list SP3 for Office XP. It only lists Office XP (and a lot of other
apps, of course).

If I do remove Office XP and re-install it, will this remove all
the updates to it as well? And then I would start over, re-install
Office XP and then SP3 for Office XP?

I really don't want to remove Office XP...is that what you're
suggesting? Or am I missing something here? How will this
utility help me if I can't remove the particular thing that seems
screwed up (SP3 for Office XP)?

Thanks.

Roger,
I am having the same problem. Removing and then re-installing Office XP
doesn't work. I tried that and still have the same problem.

Same problem here. Someone please post when/if the solution is found. Man
is it annoying.

Hi, Roger,

The utility doesn't remove SP3, or even Office, for that matter. It removes
registry entries related to the installation of Microsoft Office so that
corrupt registry data can be restored after you perform a re-installation of
Office XP. If updates are cached on your system, they may be re-applied,
but to be safe, I'd install Office again, then go to Office Update to let it
detect the patches it needs to apply.

I don't know if this was the correct method to get it to stop.....but it
worked for me. I went into the window downloaded programs file folder and
deleted the office installation. The icon popped up again for me to install.
I chose custom installation and unchecked the SP3 box. It's now gone. What
repercussions I will have, I don't know. The annoying reinstall is gone
anyway. I also found another method of which I am including the link.
