Microsoft Usenet Server

B

Bible John

For some reason the Fundamentalist Graduate school I am attending at this
time blocks all access to Usenet Newsgroups via direct or via the web. But
for some reason they have not blocked access to MS newsgroups via the
Microsoft website. Since I am using this for legit technical support purposes
I really do not understand why they would allow access via the web to msnews,
but block it via direct connect (which is many times faster and more
powerful) as I can connect to Usenet via Entourage directly.

Fundamentalists have always been far more controlling, and not as freedom
oriented as Evangelicals whom would consider me an adult at my age and would
give me liberty. But regardless i chose to go here so I must abide by the
rules.

Can someone help me write a letter to whoever is in charge at IT and ask for
access to the Msnews server? If they open that access would this allow
students to access other servers?

Maybe the university is afraid of students that would access usenet for
immoral uses. So if they opened access to msnews maybe that would mean other
students can enter in another server and gain access to bad newsgroups.

Can some explain?

Blocking access to NNTP news servers is not uncommon. You should
probably ask your IT department their rationale for blocking them.

At companies where I've worked, newsgroups are blocked because they
offer a means of "information" leaving the network without traceability.
Often, webmail is blocked for the same reason.

Also, your organization's E-mail can be controlled and scanned for
viruses at the servers. Newsgroup access can not be scanned except at
the workstation level. A few layers of the onion are peeled away, which
is not good.

Essentially, newsgroup access is all a security risk for a variety of
reasons. You can access most newsgroups through web services such as
Google or Microsoft's discussions forums, which are safer.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response.

But the access I am talking about is in my own room/living space. I am not
talking about access to NNTP while on the job. This is off the job.

Again, you'll need to first find out your IT department's rationale
behind blocking them. If you post back their absurd suppositions maybe
we can help you with counter-arguments. But trying to give you random
suggestions doesn't really make much sense.

The problem could be as simple as they installed some security software
and left it at its defaults but will open the necessary ports upon a
reasonable request.
