Microsoft User Data folder location ?

Is it possible to relocate this folder from the default location in
~/user/Documents?

My wife is making her Mac lighter so she can more easily carry it.

And during the deletion of old/unneeded files, she came across this
Microsoft folder. Fortunately she hesitated before hitting Delete.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes. but it's not recommended. Just leave it where it is.

Hi Norm:

Bobbie is correct: just don't do it. You will create a potentially
troublesome installation of Microsoft Office.

If you know how to create a Unix Symbolic Link you can move the MUD. But
you may still get issues with failed or partial updates.

Debate raged on this issue: I and many others said it should never be in
"Documents" because its content is not 'documents' and some users were not
as clever as your wife and managed to delete their entire email database and
contacts files. There were others who said Documents was the correct
location because the content was "user files" that needed to be backed up.

"Our" forces have now won this lengthy political battle: in 2008 most of the
content has moved into "Application Support", and in 2010 we must hope that
the remainder will go there too

Run the Remove Office tool before you do anything else. It's in the
Application folder.

Then get into the MUD and clean out everything except the CURRENT Entourage
identity.

THEN install the later version. Expect a lengthy pause on the first start,
because it needs to convert the Entourage Database and rebuilt the font
files.

Sorry....I should have put in my question that I've been using Office
2008 for several months and have just kept Office v. X on my Mac in case.

So.... if your recommendation still stands, is the MS Remove Office
smart enough to just remove Office v. X?

Ewww... You've got me. I can't remember. I believe it should offer you
the choice of which version(s) you want to remove. Whether that function
was present in the version that shipped with Office v.X I cannot remember.

Run it and see: If it does not ask you which version, cancel it

I don't think I even installed Entourage but I'll check.

Doesn't matter: there will still be an identity in the MUD: there has to be,
for the other applications to work.

Not unless you remove it: all the settings should remain where they are.
But it wouldn't hurt to Repair Permissions. If you get any files refusing
to open, you can then re-install to re-associate those files with the
correct version.

Will do. I guess....What's not broke....

And I'll "hide" my wife's Office v.X so she will think her Mac is
lighter.

She's on a less is more mission to cleanse her Mac. And she is
succeeding and thus a even happier Mac user today.

of course, point out that unless she empties the trash, the weight of the
computer will not change {giggle}.
