Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library: Debug Error

For a few days now and several times a day, Microsoft
Word (Office XP) fails and quits when I try to save or
close a document or when I try to exit the application.
Each time the following message appears:

Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library
Debug Error
Program: C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Office10
\WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination

(Press Retry to debug the application)

The only time I tried "Retry", the application quit
anyway. Sometimes, Windows XP sends an error report but
so far I haven't received any feedback.

Any ideas about what might be going on and how to fix it?

Navigate to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE10\STARTUP make
sure it is empty
