I have become so very very frustrated after typing up a rather large document
and then when i go to save the program gives me an error message. Initially
Word recovered my document and i tried to save it different ways but it still
was not working. Just now Word stopped recovering my document and all of my
hard work is gone. So i went online to look for a potential update and
downloaded all of them under the catagory of Microsoft Word 2002 sp2. All of
these updates don't even recognize that i have the program on my computer. My
version of Word is legit and it has never done this to me before. If anyone
has any helpful hints that would be great. Until then, i will just have to
start typing in up in Notepad. I will begin saving money for an Apple
computer now.

You didn't mention the error message so this is somewhat general.

There are a number of factors that can be involved, but you may have a corrupt Word installation, or Word template, or an
interfering add-in

Is it an issue with only one document or any Word document?

Are you opening and saving from a local hard drive using File=>Open?

Do you have more than one Office product version listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel?

Do you get the same problem if, using a backup copy of a document, hold the ctrl key when starting Word?

With your Office XP/2002 CD available can you complete a 'Repair/Reinstall' of Office from [Change] under the Office XP/2002 choice
in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel?
