microsoft word 2004 problem

I recently purchased microsoft office 2004 and installed it on my
mac. I purchased my mac desktop in Dec '06. Everything was working
fine, but now when I click on any of the office icons, the icon
briefly appears in the dock bar at the bottom of the screen and then
disappears. The programs (word, excel, etc.) will not launch. It
does the same thing when I try to open any associated (previously
created) documents. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the
program, but the same thing happens. Can you help me?

After further investigation, I think I have found the answer in the OS
X 10.4.10 Combo. Thanks Elliott.

Ah yes. I missed the "Everything was working fine, but now..."
I *should* have suppressed the urge to give the Test Drive heaps.

Thanks for coming back with a result.

One point to clarify first is that reinstalling Office on a Mac - or most
any other programs - will rarely resolve a problem. It is not only a waste
of time but can also create additional problems that complicate the issue
further. It typically is not the application software itself that is causing
the problems, but rather support files & OS files that don't get touched
during a reinstall. In this case you can most likely thank Apple for the
snafu - I bet the problem occurred not too long after installing updates to
OS X and/or QuickTime.

Go to the Apple site & download the Combo v1.1 update for Intel Macs,

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html

(re)apply it, then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions... but don't
bother to launch any of the Office programs yet:)

As a result of the reinstallation they will be out of "sync" with the user
data - you reinstalled the original version from your CD - so you will also
have to reapply the 11.3.5 & 11.3.6 updates to Office.

You may also have to reapply the QuickTime update, but that is not likely in
your case based on the symptoms:)
