Microsoft Word 2007 - Does not respond to mouse clicks, Help!

Two days ago, this problem first appeared: documents in Microsoft Word 2007
do not respond to mouse clicks, although the cursor is still visible. When I
click or try to highlight within the document, nothing happens, and when I
attempt to scroll, nothing happens. However, I can still use the mouse to
open other documents, to close/minimize the document, and to use any item on
the ribbon. Also, when I close the program, Microsoft Word crashes and it
restarts. Once it starts again, it still maintains the same problem.

Could be a damaged Word data key in the Windows registry. Close
Word 2007, start regedit, and rename the
"\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data"
key. Word 2007 will create a new Data key using the factory
default settings when you restart the program. If this fixes the
problem, great... but you might have to re-select some of your
Word Options settings. If it doesn't, you can close Word 2007,
go back into regedit, delete the newly created Word data key, and
rename the old key back to its original name to retrieve your old
Word Options settings.

What do we rename the //HKEY_CURRENT_USER? Under my name it says (Default).
When I click on it to rename it, it gives me options to write a Value Name
and a Value Number. I do not know what this means. What should I rename
this? Thanks.

Just delete it as it is very unlikely that you will need it again. At worst
there will be a few settings that you may need to change in Word.

I'm having the same problem and when I try to delete the DEFAULT, it says
"unable to delete all specified values".

I don't know where DEFAULT raised its head, but this thread started off with
very SIMPLE instructions.

Run REGEDIT, navigate to the Word DATA key and whilst it is selected press
DELETE.

Word Data Key

\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Yes, I ran REGEDIT and a new window popped up. I navigated to the
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data - in the Data
folder are 4 files labeled as follows:

Default
Settings
SettingsWordMail
Toolbars

The Default file has no value in it. My understanding from your previous
post was to delete the Default file. When I tried, it would not delete.

Perhaps I am not understanding your instructions?

OKAY, I re-read your previous post and if I understood correctly, I renamed
the DATA file and then closed REGEDIT and opened Word. It fixed the
problem!!!! Yeah! Thank you so much. Please let me know if there are any
other issues that may transpire as a result of me renaming this file. Thanks
again. Quite a relief.

The data key is used to store some setting changes that you may have made to
Word. OTOH, you may not have made any changes that are stored in that
registry key. As Word automatically created a new key when you restarted it,
you will be able to make the change again.

This may be a really dumb question but how do I load regedit? I am having
this same problem.
Thanks

Start | Run (or Winkey+R), type in

regedit

press ENTER. Double-click each 'folder' to navigate to the Word Data key and
whilst DATA is selected, press Delete.

I am still confused:( sorry. I'm in the registry and have found the HKEY
current user- I can not however find anything to do with word DATA. I have
searched every folder! Thanks for your patience:)

Terry gave you the path in his first reply:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Under Current User, click to expand Software, then Microsoft, then Office,
then 12.0, then Word, which is where you will find Data.
