Microsoft Word 2008 - Upgrading Identity

G

germanjonlang

Whenever I start Word for the first time, I get a little window that
reads Upgrading Identity.
I have found something similar in the Entourage forum, only with me it
pops up only for a second or two. I was still wondering what that was
about.
I have installed Office cleanly, (didn't upgrade) and I only use Word
so far.
Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon:

It probably means that your system is too fast :)

That dialog will appear briefly while the Microsoft Database Daemon checks
that your identity has, in fact, been upgraded.

If you no longer use the Office 2004 components, you can delete the Office
2004 database, and if you do, you should no longer see the dialog.

If this dialog hangs around for several seconds (up to a few minutes) then
it is actually upgrading the database, and that is a concern if it does it
more than ONCE.

Hope this helps

The upgrading identities window appears after each time I reboot my
system. I chose to uninstall Office '04 when I installed '08. I'll try
to clean up my MUD folder..

Thanks Hein:

Thanks for adding your name: it's so much more fun for the volunteers doing
this if we're talking to real people :)

That should fix it. If it doesn't, please come back.

I think that dialog appears briefly while the Daemon launches, and should
disappear when the daemon discovers you are already upgraded.

Cheers

I guess I did not do it right. The database at my last reboot too.

I have all my mail in IMAP-accounts so I can safely erase my entire
MUD-folder, but before I attempt to remove all past and present
settings: where are the obvious places I should look?

My list is:

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/
~/Library/Microsoft/
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.*

My system:

Leopard 10.5.2
Office 12.0.1
Intel

Hi Hein:

It's the MUD you have to move, onto your desktop.

Then do the following:

1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

2) Drag the whole MUD folder to your desktop.

3) Start Entourage. It should create a new MUD folder: it may ask you
first, if so, say "Yes".

4) Quit Entourage, then re-start it. It should be OK now.

If you want to bring the contacts and calendar items and such back from the
old identity:

5) Now slide just the Office 2004 Main Identity folder from the old MUD
back into the New MUD.

6) Now go to File>Import and let it import what you need from the old
Identity.

By allowing Entourage 2008 to create a new clean Identity first, you get rid
of the glitch that is preventing it from completing its upgrade.

Hope this helps

Thanks :)
