Microsoft word background printing hangs

I'm using MSWord 2000 in XP O/S and when I print something, it
seems to hang the application until printing is done. I have background
printing turned on, and it seems to print to the queue, then it hangs when
the deskjet 722 printer starts printing.

Any ideas what might be causing this?
