Microsoft Word Crashs When I type first letter in a document

MS Word 2000 previously working perfectly started crashing
when I would open an old or new document and type the
first letter. The screen freezes and there is a message
that word had been terminated in an unusual way and there
was a runtime error. The only way out is to
control/alt/delete to end the program. All other
functions work OK. I can open and close word files.
Explorer works OK. I wrote this e-mail with the same
computer. Word itself has some corruption.
I uninstalled MS Office, and then reinstalled it and the
error stays. I added all service patches and updates. It
is running on Windows XP Professional with all updated
security patches and other updates. The most recent
Norton Antivirus downloads say the system is clean. All
this started after my 13 year old son used Word to edit a
word file on a floppy he brought home from a school
project where the disk was being passed around from
student to student.

Any ideas? Will I have to reinstall XP?

If you haven't already done so, disable the Office Plug-in in Norton
AntiVirus. It may not be causing this specific problem, but it causes plenty
of others, and it doesn't add to your virus protection provided you leave
Auto-Protect enabled. You might also want to try the troubleshooting tips at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm, which are helpful
for more than just opening Word.
