Microsoft Word for Mac

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have a MacBook and I just got Microsoft office for it. I was just looking around and typing in Word when I noticed that when i use the return key it doesn't skip to the next line, it's more like 1.5 lines skipped. Although, when i type and it automatically goes to the next line it single spaces. Can anyone help me figure this out or tell me what's wrong?

It isn't what you think it's actually an imposition of something that is
"technically" preferably but with which many [understandably] are not
