Microsoft Word freezes everytime I try to select a file

I had the strangest experience this morning: Word freezes whenever I try to
select a file. I can only save where I am at the moment (My Documents). Any
idea?

Thanks,

Gianni

My Office 2003 products - Excel, Word and Power Point are all doing th
same thing. Here is more detailed information:
1. When I try to open a document using the file open command, if th
file is in the root of "my Documents" - no problem. If it is in
sub-folder under my documents, it freezes up and I get the old "No
responding" message.
2. When I try to save a document using the save icon or file save, n
problem. If I try to do a save as, it freezes up and I get the No
Responding message.
3. If I go to Explorer and open a document in a sub-folder, n
problem, I double click on the file name and it opens right up but if
try to save it using save as, same deal, it freezes but I can save it t
the original location in the sub-folder.

This started Thursday morning - every thing was fine Wednesday evening
Here is the error signature one from Word and one from Excel:
szAppName : WINWORD.EXE szAppVer : 11.0.6568.0 szModName : hungapp

szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

szAppName : EXCEL.EXE szAppVer : 11.0.8012.0 szModName : hungapp

szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

I am running Home XP with Office 2003 including all current updates fo
both. My registry is clean and the only recent change I have made wa
to upgrade to Norton Virus 2006. If anyone can help us both it woul
be wonderful. Thanks Kac

Hi,
The following info is from Jay Freedman under the subject "SAVE AS ALWAYS
NOT RESPONDING"
The quick but unsafe way is to uninstall the security patch that's
causing the problem. In Add/Remove Programs, check the box at the top
marked "Show updates". Select "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)" and click the Remove button.

For a better workaround, until a new security patch is ready, read
Steven Hui's post at
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...&q=verclsid+hui&rnum=5&hl=en#a9fb82836c014916.
Use the registry change in Method 1. Also read the replies that follow
that post, which give some useful advice.

The tempory fix worked very well for me.

A Microsoft employee posted this advice a few minutes ago:

"There is now a KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165)
addressing the issues that customers are reporting with MS06-015. It
provides information on the cause and what the customer can do to
eliminate the problems they're seeing without removing the security
update."

Sincerely, Thanks to everyone including Jay who helped direct me to th
fix. I applied it and it works. Also, (not so sincerely) thank you s
much to Bill Gates and his team for allowing me to participate in hi
beta test of the new security patch.
A couple of words of advice to the non-technical among us: First, mak
sure that you get both sections within the {}'s when you copy the code
half of it doesn't work. Just copy and paste the code in to avoi
typing errors. The Knowledge Base doesn't tell you this but to chang
the data value to "1" as instructed, once you have pasted in the code
move your cursor anywhere else then right click on the new code an
select modify; the data value of "0" will be highlighted, just enter
one over the zero.

It's not a difficult process or anything to be afraid of... If i
doesn't work or messes something up and you want to remove it, you g
back to the same place, right click on the code and say delete.
Again, thank Jay... Kac

To anyone who can assist:

I tried this security fix and it worked - partially. After performing
the regestry edit, and when using the "open" and "save as" commands the
extensions do not show up. Interestengly, everything is fine for my
account (my computer is set up for my wife, kids, and myself); but, for
the other accounts I have this error.

Can anyone help???

Thanks,

Jamie
