Microsoft Word Has encountered a problem and must close

I am trying to copy a block of text from one word document to another and
when I select Paste in the document being copied to, I get this error and
Word closes. I am copying a block of text in a table. I've tried copying row
by row and I get the same error. It doesnt happen in all my documents only
the ones that I am currently working with.
Any ideas? I'm running Word 2003 SP2
Thanks

I Have reinstalled my complete Office 2003 and am still getting this error. I
have deleted Normal.dot. I have downloaded all the available updates. This
is so frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause this and
how i can eliminate this.
Thanks so much.

Take a look at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.
When did this problem start? What is your operating system?

The problem seemed to start earlier this week when I was working with two
document files and tried to copy the contents of one of the files into the
other using the normal CUT and PASTE function. I initially selected the whole
document and got the error message. Then I tried to select everything but the
first and last paragraph markers. Then I tried even selecting just a couple
rows from the table. The error occurred each time!

The information being copied was consisted of one or more tables. I am
thinking that there must be something wrong with the table. If I select just
the text and do a Paste Special, Unformatted text, it copies ok. But if I try
to select the table and paste the table I get the error message. I also get
this message sometimes if I am trying to copy text from a PPT presentation
into the Word Document.

I'm using an almost new (one month old) laptop running Windows XP Media
Center edition. I have downloaded all available updates and have reinstalled
my Office 2003 package (Word, Outlook, And Excel, And Powerpoint). I've also
installed the hot fix KB912022 which I learned about from this web site.
I also occasionally get the same message "has encountered a problem and must
close" when I close Outlook. I have no problem opening Word or Outlook or
PPT.

I am at a loss as to what to do.
Thanks for your help.

Because of the timing, I suspect Microsoft update MS015 (K**08531). This is
a Windows 2003 security update. Check if it was installed on your system. If
it was, try uninstalling it and then see what happens with your problem.

I know I'm running the risk of sounding pretty dumb but how do I check to see
if that update has been installed? And it it has been how do I uninstall.
Also do you Mean Windows XP update or Office 2003 update?
Thanks again for your help.

Windows XP update.

Finding it is a bit obscure.

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

At the top of the dialog box is a checkbox to view updates as well as
programs. Then under Windows XP you'll find a number of Security Update for
Windows entry with KB numbers. On mine it is listed as (KB908531) installed
on 4/12/2006. If you search in this group with that number as the search
term you'll find a number of posts on it within the last few days including
at least one with instructions on uninstalling, doing some sort of cleaning
and then reinstalling. I guess I would say just try uninstalling first and
see if it fixes the problem. Then reinstall and see if the problem comes
back. If it does, then follow up on how to be able to get it installed
without the problems.

It doesn't cause me problems but it apparently has caused a number of
strange problems in Office programs.

I don't have that update installed! I am at a complete loss. This document is
110 pages and I am thinking that I have to copy and save as unformatted text
and reformat the whole thing. I'm just afraid that if i spend the time doing
that I will still have the problem.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Pat

Try as rtf first, that should preserve your table structure.
