We need a lot more information before we can begin to diagnose this:

What's your OS version? Have you updated Office/Word with the Service Pack
1?

What do you mean by "stops responding"? Can you open it? If not, what
happens when you try? If so, what happens next?

Have you made any changes to your setup recently? Upgrade to Tiger maybe?
Install other software? Add new fonts?

You'll probably find what you're looking for somewhere on the MacWord site
noted in my signature, but if you give us more information, we can probably
narrow it down for you.

Same problem here. I'm using an imac (G4) with everything updated to
the max (Office, OSX, etc.) While working in WORD, the beach ball
starts spinning. When I go to Force Quit, in a red parenthesis there
is a message next to Word that says "Word not responding."

Hi Dan,

The most common cause for this is Font issues (cache corruption,
duplicate fonts, font corruption.....). Try looking in
http://word.mvps.org/ (not with Safari or OmniWeb since they don;t
support >2 frames well). There are a lot of resources there for tracking
down which of these issues it is.

Actually, <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/index.htm> is not up-to-date on
all the recent font issues with Tiger. You would do better to read my
previous responses on the recent thread called "Word 2004 hanging
unpredictably in 10.4.1, no font error messages" on this newsgroup.

If those suggestions don't work, post back.

THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM FOR ME. Word stops responding. I get the eternal
beachball and have to Force-Quit. Several times a day.

I replaced font caches, ran Font Finagler, restarted.

Nothing so far fixes this problem.

Hi Cotty:

I accept that it is a big problem for you, and I would love to help you.
However, I need exact information from you to enable me to do that.

When you say that "nothing so far fixes the problem", I need to know what
you have already tried. I also need exact information on your version of
Word and your version of the OS. Without that, the number of possible
answers is close to infinite: neither of us would live long enough...

Cheers
