microsoft word sections

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel just had microsoft for mac 2004, and it had the arrows on the sides of words (in notebook layout) when doing bullet points that allowed that section to collapse into the arrow, like 2004 2008 has the same arrows but everytime i reopen my document it doesnt save, which arrows i left open and which i left close. how do i get the arrows to be saved?
