Microsoft Word Shutting down Unexpectedly

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Have any of you experienced Microsoft Word for Mac 2008 shutting down unexpectingly?

It's been known to happen to "some of the people some of the time" but
there's usually a specific cause that can readily be remedied -- and
re-installing Office isn't the fix.

Need of disk permissions repair & failure to stay on top of Office & OS X
updates rank high on the list of probable suspects. If those conditions are
satisfied & a restart of the Mac doesn't correct the problem there are other
paths to pursue, but start there.

Took it into the Local Apple store and rhe Genius made sure everything is up to date including Snow Leopard! Restarted the MacBook and yet the problem still occurs. Please give me another step!

Did the "genius" replace your Normal Template? If not, you struck a fairly
dumb genius (who should have known to do that, it's a basic trouble-shooting
step...) and that's your next step :)

Unless you have moved it, the file Normal.dotm should be in
/Users/~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

Quit ALL Microsoft Office applications, then delete Normal.dotm, and empty
the trash.

Since it does no harm, let's do the whole job while we're messing around:

1) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

2) ~/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

3) ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

The settings in those files are all related. If you delete them all, Word
creates fresh new defaults for the ones it needs when it next starts, and
the problem should be cured.

Cheers

Wow! I think the normal.dotm and other files deleted might have done the trick. I am not a serious techy guy and I thoroughly grateful if this is the fix that I needed. thanks a ton!

Well, if you are not a serious Techie Guy, you could not be expected to know
this stuff.

But Apple Geniuses are paid professionals, and they ARE expected to know
basic application troubleshooting :)

So are Microsoft MVPs, although we are not paid. Even so, we wouldn't
remain an MVP for long if we didn't know this :)

Glad you got it sorted...
