Microsoft Word X for Mac unexpectedly quit

Under ownerships and permissions (in Get Info), in details, at owner is lock.
If this is locked, and access to the document is attempted instead of
denying access it may cause Word to quit. In one document when changing
footer, the document and Word quit on closing Header and footer dialog
box. Unlocking the document corrected the situation.

That sounds like a network or disk permissions problem.

What should happen if Word encounters a locked document is that it should
open it read-only. If your network server is correctly set up, Word should
tell you who has the document open if it is open, and as if you want to make
a copy or wait for it.

If Word cannot determine who has the document open because there is no .lck
file in the folder, or if the document is not open it is locked, Word should
open it read-only and prompt you for a new file name when you attempt to
save.

So I would run Disk Utility and try a Repair Permissions.

Hope this helps
