My friend was typing his midterm paper and word just shut off unexpected.
the paper was not saved yet. is thair a way to recover the paper?

If it had never been saved, then it is lost. The obvious tip here is to
always start by saving the new document, then save regularly while working
(it only take a microsecond to press Ctrl+S occasionally). Providing the
Backup option is toggled on, if Word crashes you will be able to recover to
the previous save point.
