2- what is the purpose of Office compatibilty packs

3) Yes, but works 9 needs an update patch for it to be correctly identified
by Office 2007 upgrade
2) Compatibility packs are for early versions of eg Word to be able to open
Word 2007 format files

Q1 - If you have trial Office software on the computer that is where the
Office '07 updates are headed, even if not activated or used. Check in
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to see if they are installed and for
removal.

Q2 - Compatibility pack for Office is designed to allow Office 2000-2003
programs open Office 2007 data files. Works 9 will read Office '07 files
but I don't know if the compatibility pack is necessary for that feature.

Q3 - Works 9 qualifies for the upgrade to all available upgrade versions of
Office '07. See:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/FX101754511033.aspx for the
various versions available.

Can a preinstall works 9.0 (from Dell product id has OEM in it) is qualified
for upgrade, or a person is required to purchase retail copy

Thanks

As long as you run the patch that DL mentioned (can obtain here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943290/en-us) the upgrade should work

If the computer crashes and you need to reinstall the OS (on the same
computer) you would need to reinstall Works from Dell's backup disk and the
patch before running the upgrade again.
