MicroSoft Works V 4.0

C

Clyde Branson

I realize that this version is obsolete but I need some
help. I had used this version on my Powerbook G3 for ovefr
two years and removed it several months agol. Yesterdeay I
atempted to replace it; however, it gave me the following
message:"The file being processed (Install Pak) does not
have the format of a valid Setup Script file." Second
message:"Microsoft Setup was not completed successfully."

I immediately tried to install this version on an older Mac
(5200/75LC) an it accepted it immediatley and completed the
instalation.

What do I need to do to get this version back into my G3
where it had been previously.

Thanks

Sorry to say I don't have an answer for you but I do have a question.
I've got a friend who is trying to convert his old MS Works (PC) files
to Office: Mac X. So far I've found no options that would do it
reliably. Any suggestions? How compatible are the old Works for Mac
and for PC? You may want to try eBay. People sometimes dump old
software or maybe someone with an old mac still has it installed.

How about MacLinkPlus from Dataviz? There may be a demo available for you on
their website?

I am still using version 13, and that has MS Works 2-95 (!) for windows in
the options. Office X isn't there but it seems to work with Word 98/2001

For MS Works 4.0 for the Mac, you shouldn't need MacLink Plus. From a
previous post by J.E. McGimpsey:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you haven't already done so, you'll need to install the Microsoft Works 4
converter from the Value Pack folder on the Office v.X Install disk (run the
Value Pack Installer application).
As with any installation from the Value Pack, if you've applied
updates to Office v.X, you should reapply them. You can dowload the
10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updates (10.1.3 is not necessary) from
MacTopia Downloads
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx
After updating, always repair permissions:
OS 10.2.x/3.x: Run the Disk Utility (in the ./Applications/Utilities
folder). From the First Aid tab, click "Repair Disk Permissions".
OS 10.1.5: Run Repair Privileges (same folder, or download from
Apple:
I totally agree - go for free everytime! I just thought a free trial with MLP
would be useful if there are loads of files to convert. I'm sure MLP can
batch processs.
MacLinkPlus Deluxe can indeed batch convert files. However, MS Word X will
open them almost like regular files if you have the converter installed.
MLPD is, by the way, one of the best software investments I've made in a
long time.
Hi, Clyde,
This might work for you: Copy all of the files for MSW installed on your
older Mac to a CD or other removable media. Then, drag-and-drop them to the
equivalent locations on your G3. You didn't say whether you use OSX with
Classic or OS 9.2.2, but the MSW4 system files all have to go into the
Classic folder. MSW4 will *not* run in an OSX-only environment.
