Microsoft's commitment to Groove

Ronnie G

I've been using Groove for almost a year, have installed it on for 50 users
in my organization, shared it with my State's Department of Human Services,
and now to various nonprofits, each with 50 or so users each. Yet I find
that with Groove still not fully functional on a 64-bit system, even with
Windows 7, (the file sharing limits), no integration with Messenger Live etc.
that I have this sinking feeling that Microsoft is going to let this nice
piece of software fade into history.

Has MS offered a public acknowledgement of its commitment to Groove moving
forward? Does it have a planned release date of the next upgrade? I'd
really like to know before recommending it to literally hundreds more users.
Can you MSFT folks offer your thoughts on this please?

Mark, thanks so much for your note and information. Unfortunately this is
exactly what I have been fearing. I don't have Sharepoint, don't know beans
about it and neither do the scores of people I have who are using Groove, nor
the dozens who will be learning to use it in the next few weeks. I realize
that its possible the migration to Sharepoint Workspace might be fairly easy,
but I'm skeptical. After spending so much time training my people on Groove,
I'm not completely confident that we won't just drop any efforts in that
regard.

I wish they'd just make it work fully with a 64-bit system. Maybe that's
the "collaboration option" for those who don't use Sharepoint. One can only
hope. Once again, I really appreciate the response.

Hi Ronnie,
Hi Ronnie,

I confirm that 64bit support is planned for this release.
And i also confirm you will be able to use SharePoint Workspace without
SharePoint, as you are currently doing with Groove 2007.

Sounds great! Ok, now one more question... In migrating to or upgrading
from Groove 2007 to Sharepoint Workspaces, will existing Groove workspaces,
contacts, tools, etc. be usable i.e. transferred intact into the Sharepoint
Workspaces, etc.? Or wll each of these Groove workspaces and related content
need to be re-created manually in Sharepoint Workspaces?

(I think this will be the last question before my big class on Thursday.)

You will only have to migration your account from Groove 2007 to SharePoint
Workspace 2010.
Groove 2007 workspace should be supported AS IS.

Hi Ronnie -

I don't have a crystal ball, but I do have the next best thing- a
link
to
the Groove teams' blog.
http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint_workspace_development_team/

You can read about the plans for the next version of Groove, which is
being
renamed "SharePoint Workspace".
