Migrate Excel 1.0

I have Excel 1.x documents from a dead machine, and need to convert
them to a newer version of Excel. I have a 9.2.2 iMac running
Office:mac 2001, but cannot open the spreadsheets. What steps are
required to convert these old documents into new documents? What is
the highest version of Excel that will still read 1.x documents AND load
on a G3 or higher Mac.

I have tried icExcel, but the conversion just produces gibberish in the
cells.

According to article #290772 on the Microsoft Knowledge
base, ( http://makeashorterlink.com/?P36F23626 ) The
latest version reading Excel 1.0 files is Excel 4.

If you can get hold of a copy of XL4, you should be able
to open your file : XL4 seems to run fine on Mac OS 9.2
(where Excel 5 doesn't).

It seems there is no other solution, as far as I could
find...
