Migrate from Basic to Advanced install

Hi,

I am in charge of a Project Server 2007 deployment which was
originally installed using "Basic" mode. Now usage has grown and I
would like to move the database to a separate machine. However, from
what I gather, this is not possible when PS was installed using
"Basic" mode. I have already tried creating a fresh "Advanced"
install and restoring a backup, but it fails - supposedly because of
the different installation mode.

Is there a way to migrate from a Basic installation to Advanced, so I
can move my database to a separate server?

Regards,

Fernando

PS: SQL Server 2005 licenses are not a problem, we have licenses for
the Enterprise edition.

If you don't have a lot of projects in the system, you might consider a
manual migration of the plan files. I'm unaware of any specific migration
path from one to the other, but you should try the playbooks.exe tool to see
if you can use it to migrate settings from one instance to the other.

Thank you Gary, I will try the tool you mentioned. Unfortunately, we
have quite a few projects (about 300), so moving everything over
manually will be tough :( What's so special about "Basic"
installation that makes it so different from the regular option? I am
not questioning your answer, it was just a big surprise to me that I
am so severely restricted from scaling simply because of the
installation mode - shouldn't the DB models and such be the same
whichever way you install the product?

Thanks again,

Fernando

You can try this:

Install a small farm following the directions either in our book or on
TechNet.
When you get to the point of provisioning the new site, when the system
asks whether you want to create new databases or connect to the existing
databases, select the latter. If that works, you're in business. Restoring a
backup on top of new databases will never work, you must connect to the
databases during the provisioning process.

I haven't seen any documentation that tells us this is possible, but I also
haven't seen any documentation that says this is not possible. I'm sorry
that I can't be more specific, but the simple installation leaves out too
much to be of interest to me, so I haven't ever done this type of
installation.
