Migrate PS2007 to new server HELP??

G

Grant 702

I have tried unsuccessfully to migrate from one server to another server in
the same domain. I have followed the MS article on technet
(http://technet2.microsoft.com/Offic...0126-4776-86bf-96f6c02c8cb71033.mspx?mfr=true)
using SharePoint central administration. So the steps I am doing include:

1. Installing PS2007 on the new server
2. Backing up old server using Central Administration
3. Restoring entire farm on new server using Central Administration
4. Create new instance of Project Server using Shared Service Provider

The problems I seem to be getting are that Central Administration creates a
Project Server site collection e.g pwa. containing the project workspaces. I
then have to create a Project Server instance on the new service provider
which I want to match the site collection so it will belong to the same site
collection. It throws an exception saying the site collection already exists.

Has anyone done this before? Can you advise what I am doing wrong or is
there a better way to start with?

Thanks

Hi Grant,

The error is step 4. You should not need to create a new instance of PWA -
it should have been restored as part of your backup. Provisioning at this
point will require the site collection to be deleted which will wipe out any
WSS content you have. Also you do not need to do any configuration of
PS2007 on the target farm as that too will get created from the backup. You
should only need to start the service. I tend to follow the following broad
steps:-

1. Install PS2007 (not standalone!) just to the point when I can access
SharePoint Central Administration - don't create any web applications or do
any further configuration.
2. Restore the Windows SharePoint Services Web Application (from the line
just below SharePoint_Config on a full farm backup)
3. Restore SharedServices1 (or whatever your SSP is called) and everything
below it.
4. Start the Project Application Service
5. Browse to you PWA site.

It should also work with a full farm restore. Do not change the project
database names during the restore as some internal cross references will
then be broken.

If you are moving to a different domain then you may have the additional
issue that none of the users in PWA can be authenticated once the restore is
complete. In this case you could use forms authenticated users in the
database or modify the account settings in the MSP_RESOURCES table in the
_published db so you can log in with one user then modify the others through
the UI of PWA.

Regards,

Brian.
