I'm creating a procedure for reinstalling Office XP Pro on a new computer
form an old one. This can be used in our organization when we replace PCs
with newer ones or when someone's PC needs to be replaced for any reason.
I worked on a migration project at a company that used Lotus Notes. With
Lotus Notes installed but not configured for any users, we would copy certain
files from the old PC to the new one and all the profiles, etc. would be in
tact on the new PC. Of course with the new PC, if there were multiple users
as well just one user, you would have to first log on to that PC as each user
so a profile was created in Documents and Settings so you could copy any data
files to the appropriate folder. When the procedure was done, the users could
log onto the new computer and all the settings were the same as the old.
We needed to get files like notes.ini, favorites and a few others, copy them
from the old computer to the new, replacing files such as the notes.ini. We
even went as for as writing a script to make all folders that would be needed
for their location on the new computer, copy the files from the old computer
and putting them in the folders that we had created, zipping up the folder
structure with all the files, and then moving the zip file to a network
share. Once you had logged into the new computer as all the users that would
be using it, we would extract the zip file to it, and the would neatly go to
their correct location.
Does anyone know of all the files and their locations that I would need to
do this with PCs using XP Pro and Office XP? I need to know all the files
that are needed for Office XP. If done correctly, no configuration what so
ever is needed. Obviously, you would need to get any PST and PAB files, but
with only these you still need to setup all the profiles on the new computer.
Is there an INI file that Outlook uses to store all these settings? Does this
file or is there another one that tells Outlook where the user's data files
are located?
Thanks
