Migrating to new computer

I currently have Office Standard 2007 installed on an XP machine. I intend to
buy a new computer with Win7. As part of prep for this, I installed Win7
release candidate on a machine and tried to install Office. I was unable to
do the installation because I had already installed this copy of Office
elsewhere. If I uninstall Office on the existing XP box, will I be able to
install it on the new Win7 box? Thanks.

If it is an OEM copy of Office Standard 2007 then that is why you can't
move it. OEM is licensed to the first machine it is installed on. (and
sell for so much less than a Retail copy).

It's not an OEM copy. It's a separately purchased version.

Here are some general suggestions for you - your License Terms provide the
details you need.

15. REASSIGN TO ANOTHER DEVICE. You may reassign the license to a
different device any number of times, but not more than one time every 90
days. If you reassign, that other device becomes the "licensed device."
If you retire the licensed device due to hardware failure, you may reassign
the license sooner.

In your 2007 version - click on Office Button - Options - Resources - About
- View the Microsoft Software License Terms

Normally the License terms includes sections for Retail License Terms, OEM
License Terms and Media-Less License Terms (In Office 2010 - Product Key
Card - PKC will replace Media-Less or MLK)

Then, under the Installation and Use Rights, it specifically states how you
can assign your license.

For 2007 products, this is also a good resource page for License Terms in
identifying the kind of product you have:

If your designation is FPP, then the Retail License Terms below apply to
you. If your designation is OEM, then the OEM License Terms below apply to
you. If your designation is MLK, then the Media-less License Kit Terms
below apply to you.

There is nothing to stop you from installing YOUR copy of CD of Office
Standard on a new machine. There is no way an Operating System can know
you have installed it on another machine because there is no marking on
the CD. So that is sorted out.

Now you said you have installed an RC version of Win7 so this clears the
fact that you are not likely to have any trial versions on your
system. Normally, trial versions are always pre-installed on all new
systems because these idiots get paid by M$ to do so. You don't have
this problem because you have performed a clean install. You might have
installed a trial version yourself which you haven't told us about in
which case this may be the cause.

Do you get any messages on the screen? If so please let us know. Also,
is it likely your CD is damaged?

it and install it on the replacement PC.

You are correct. I wasn't clear in my description. I was able to install the
software on the Win 7 machine, but I couldn't register it because it was
already registered on another machine.
