Milestones Last Multiple Days? How is this Possible?

A

Andy S

I am working with Project Pro 2007.

When I create a schedule from Project Start Date (found under Project -
Project Information -> Schedule From), a milestone in my schedule
lists the same date under the start and finish date columns. This
makes sense to me, as a milestone has zero duration.

However, when I schedule from Project Finish Date, a milestone in my
schedule will list the earliest start and latest finish date of the
entire schedule (assuming no dependencies to the milestone). The
duration still is listed as zero.

Additionally, if the milestone does have dependencies tied to it, the
start and finish dates will still be at least one day apart. The
duration is still listed as zero, once again.

I do not see this same occurrence in Project Pro 2003.

Hi Andy,

I can't repro this behaviour myself. Feel free to mail me your plan and
I'll happily take a look.

Paul - I just sent you the schedule.

For anyone else interested in replicating the situation, follow these
steps:

1. Open a new, blank project.
2. Create 3 tasks --- the first with 5 days duration, the second with
0 days duration, the third with 5 days duration.
3. Make Task1 a predecessor to Task2, and Task2 a predecessor to
Task3.
4. Go to Project Information and change the Schedule From drop down
selection to Finish Date.

Now notice how the start and finish dates of your milestone task
(Task2) are different.

Furthermore, if you now delete the predecessors, you will notice your
milestone stretches the entire the length of the schedule (5 days).

I can't wrap my mind around why the scheduling engine would do this
--- any thoughts?

Hi Andy,

Sorry but it's got me stumped and I'm starting to think it's a bug in the
scheduling engine.

Reducing the timescale down to minutes clearly shows the milestone starting
at 0800 on the same day at its predecessor.

Maybe someone else in the newsgroup has got an opinion.

If this is proving to be a pain, I'd suggest raising a call with Microsoft.

I cannot duplicate the behavior you see. Do you have Service Pack 1 applied
to your Microsoft Project 2007 application? Let us know.
