MIME format

I subscribe to a listserv in digest format where some of the messages are
unreadable. Sometimes there will be a notation like this:

This is a MIME message. If you are reading this text, you may want to
consider changing to a mail reader or gateway that understands how to
properly handle MIME multipart messages.

Sometimes there will be messages in what looks like HTML code, although I
have Entourage set to accept HTML messages.

Additionally, when attachments are present with any single message, they
present as pages of code. Is it impossible to receive attachments when using
digest mode?
