You don't mention what version of Microsoft Outlook you are using. The
reason I ask is that the later versions allow the main window to be hidden
when minimized and the only clue that Outlook is still running is that its
icon will be right next to the clock in the system tray. Is it possible
that you have unused icons in the system tray are configured to be hidden?
