Minor glitches after publishing

C

CWhit

Just a couple of minor things after publishing: Both of these items worked
perfectly in Publisher web preview and do not after publishing.

1. My hyperlinks unvisited are white; visited, yellow. After I exit the
site, when I return later, the links should have returned to their
"unvisited" color, shouldn't they? They don't. Once I've visited, no matter
how many times I leave and come back, the links remain yellow.

2. The automatic date update does not work -- the date stays the same.

I have a couple of strange things going on too that are weird but not
particularly threatening. Will post them later.

What happens if you click "refresh" in Internet Explorer view menu?

Visited hyperlinks will remain, the way to get rid of them is to clear your
history.

Mary:
Thanks for responding. Here i my URL: http://www.burdin-adr.com.Did try
refresh on both aol and IE browsers with no effect. I did discover that when
I turn aol off (I usually leave it running since I have DSL) and back on the
"visited" links return to their "unvisited" status. A minor problem, and
thanks for the tip.

However, I have a more peculiar problem. Before publishing this site to our
permanent web host, earthlink, I was using a free test site recommended by a
MS tech, Netfirms, to clear up problems and actually test the site on the
web. When I first accessed the site with a dial up connection on another
computer, the aol browser was able to load images, even if pretty slowly.
Then I compressed all my photos and images through Photoshop to make them
even smaller (average size of a photo about 8KB), and afterward when I used
the dial up I could load no images at all, receiving the dreaded broken
connection "x" where the photo should be. However, some of the helpful
contributors to this group visited the site
(http://www.burdin-adr.netfirms.com) with dial up connections and had no
problems, so I assumed this was a browser problem unique to me.

After successfully publishing to earthlink last night, I visited the new
site with my dial up and still had the same problem. Just out of curiosity,
I visited the netfirms site, which is still up, and everything loaded so fast
I couldn't believe it. It was almost as fast as a high speed connection.
All images, all photos loaded and almost all at once. Would somebody please
visit both of these sites for me with a dial up and see what happens? Again,
the permanent site is www.burdin-adr.com, and the old test site is
www.burdin-adr.netfirms.com. I am really curious about this, as it may have
implications for the few dial up clients we have. Thanks once more.

CWhit,

The size of the images you uploaded to Earthlink are the same as your old
site, and thus the download speed will basically be the same. The reason the
old site loads faster is you already have a copy of the page on your hard
drive in your temp cache. Delete your temp internet cache and go back and
check that way ( in IE > tools > internet options > delete files). Note also
your link and visited link colors will be the "unvisited" color again too.

I did clear the history and found that the images once again did not load at
all from either site. Since then I have fired up a couple of old computers
(200 and 266 mhz)with old versions of aol (4.0 and 7.0) and the images loaded
perfectly! So it's got to be my current aol browser. I've checked the
settings, tried it with Top Speed enabled and disabled, with always compress
graphcis and without, etc., with no effect -- images simply will not load.
Next step is to re-install aol 9.0. If anybody has had a chance to dial up
my site, http://www.burdin-adr.com, I'd greatly appreciate a report. Thanks.

Probably image file sizes issue. The mediator images do load slow for their
size...did you optimize them prior to using them in Pub?

Rob, yes I compressed all the images in Photoshop before using them. The
largest photo among the mediators is me at 14k; Mary Burdin is 11K and all
the rest range from 6 to 8K. The total of all images on the page including
the ad at the right is about 120k. If everybody else is able to load them on
dial up, the problem has to be my browser. I have also loaded them on old
aol browsers and on old versions of IE with no problem at all. Thanks.

I doubt it's your browser. The mediators load slow for me on vdsl...not that
slow but slow enough that it's noticeable. I don't do much web work with Pub
but I seem to remember overlapping objects causing a problem on a few test
sites I messed with.

The reason I believe it must be my browser is that I have accessed this site
not only with my DSL where the mediator page loads in less than 2 sec., but
with older browsers -- much older -- in Windows 95 and Windows 98 on ancient
computers of mine, and the photos all load very quickly for a dial up.
Several posters to this group, including David F. have said that they load
fine on their dial ups. The point is, they don't load at all on my aol 9.0
browser, optimized. I don't mean they load slowly, I mean not at all, ever.
