Misbehaved desktop document shortcuts

I recently encountered a behaviour that has me flumoxed. I have a client who
is experiencing weird behaviour with existing desktop shortcuts to documents.
When a particular user double-clicks on a shortcut to an existing document ,
both Word and Excel open without opening the designated document. No errors,
just no file. That user can then manually open the file with full
permissions using "Open Document" from the File Menu and work on the document
without a hitch. This behaviour occurs with both existing shortcuts and with
those that she creates.

When other users login to that computer, the document shortcuts work as they
should. The problem is not an Office problem, but rather seems to be tied to
the user profile. The computer is a member of a domain and all domain users
have local administrator privaleges. It is running Windows XP Pro and Office
2003 and all Windows Updates are in place. Roving profiles are used and the
particular frustrated user experiences the problem no matter which computer
she uses while running both Office 2003 and Office 2000 as is installed on a
couple of the other machines, further pointing to user profile corruption.

Any ideas short of wiping out her profile and starting again? Registry
hack? Help!!!
