Miscrsoft is losing me real fast!!!

I have been a fan of Outlook, all of Office, and Windows, but, Microsoft is
now losing me really fast.

I had a problem with Outlook, I came to this forum for help, someone gave me
three very specific tasks, and I am sure he was correct, as far as the tasks
went. But they did not do the trick.

So, foolishly, I decided to uninstall Outlook, which apparently meant
uninstalling all of Office, and then re-installing,

Before I re-installed, I ran a registry cleaner and re-booted.

A few minutes into the installation, Office balked at not finding some sort
of "proof.en-us...\msi", and another similar file. I took that to a search
and found people all over a whole bunch of forums with the same probelms,
these proofs apparently not being on the installation disk.

I tried the normal installation and the custom installation. I tried the
custom with that proofing item Yes, and No. Nothing worked.

So, I decided to install Office XP. That installed fine, Word, Excel,
Access, but not Outlook, which is where this all started. Outlook installed
but can not find its normal folder list with Email, Contacts, etc, and
nothing I do seems to be able to ressurrect that.

If I can not get this resolved, I am gone, to something else, I am not sure
what, maybe Open Office, I am just not going to stay here unless my porblems
can be resolved.

I do not mneed Outlook for mail, TBird handles mail beautifully. I need
Outlook for its Contact lists, which i use at home and at work.

It is not neccessary to uninstall all of Office, in order to remove only
outlook, and it has never been neccessary.
Posting an incomplete err.msg is unlikely to result in any specific help
Depends what you mean by 'normal folder list'

Thanks. So, what do your suggest?

The folder list in Outlook 97 that I could not get was the list in Outlook
Today, Calendar, Contacts, Deleted Items, Drafts, Inbox, Journal, etc.

Should I uninstall Office 97 and start the installation of Office 2007 to
get the error messages, and then come back with them?

I would be quite happy with Office XP if Outlook 97 will install and run
properly.

Did you return to that thread and say what went wrong so that those who
contributed originally could suggest alternative solutions?

Wrong. You do a Change, expand the Office installation tree, click Outlook,
and change the option from "Run from my computer" to "Not available".
Finish the wizard and Outlook will be removed.

This could lead to problems. Registry cleaners often remove too much.

Is your install an upgrade or a full retail version? I can imagine a
registry cleaner could remove indications that a prior version was installed
so that an update version can't detect it and would then fail the
installation.

So, I decided to install Office XP. That installed fine, Word, Excel,

installed but can not find its normal folder list with Email,
Contacts, etc, and nothing I do seems to be able to ressurrect that.

Either it installed or it didn't. Not installing is not the same as
installing but unable to run.

If I can not get this resolved, I am gone, to something else, I am
not sure what, maybe Open Office, I am just not going to stay here
unless my porblems can be resolved.

OpenOffice doesn't have an Outlook replacement. Using OpenOffice won't help
in this particular instance.

I do not mneed Outlook for mail, TBird handles mail beautifully. I

Tell us the exact errors and maybe we can help. You've given no information
with which troubleshooting can happen.

Office 97 Where did that come into the picture. Your original post
mentioned Office 2007 and XP (containing Outlook 2002)

I would be quite happy with Office XP if Outlook 97 will install and
run properly.

Why would you want to mix versions like that? Besides, Outlook 97 cannot be
used with many of today's ISPs because they require SMTP authentication and
Outlook 97 cannot do that.

You now mention OL97, whereas previously stated you had reinstalled
OfficeXP, with OL I had assumed.
Assuming you are using a winXP or Vista PC
Uninstall the previous versions of OL and or Office, clear your temp files &
reboot the PC.
Then reinstall Office 2007, I'll assume your version of 2007 includes OL2007

When it comes to starting/setting up OL, it it offers to use an existing
Profile or data file, decline & have it create new ones. Then enter your
mail account info & test the accounts

So, O.K., first, I did not mix versions. I uninstalled Office 2007 and I
installed Office XP.

But what do your suggest, how do I get the necessary files, the Proofing
files, so that Office 2007 will install properly? As I said, there is a lot
of pain and grief over this, all over the internet, even people who bought
Office 2007.

I tried searching Microsoft, I tried searching the internet. Microsoft had
nothing that I could find. The internet provided all sorts of indecipherable
torrent downloads which I would not touch. But, if I am to continue to use
Office, either XP or 2007, I need to somehow get it, all programs, to work.

Any concrete help will be appreciated.

You posted an incomplete err msg with regard your installation of Office
2007
When I have clean installed Office 2007, or upgraded an Office 2003
installation to 2007, I have not had any err's
I'll assume you have an Office 2007 cd

I think that you did not see that on the installation of Office 2007, it
never gets past a point where it said that it can not find
Proofing.en-us\Proof.es\Proof.cab and also the same message but ending with
..msi. So, I never get to Outlook, a profile, or anything else.

Before I get to configuring anything, I need to get past that point. I need
the proofing tools. I have searched all over microsoft.com, nothing comes up.

First, I need to be able to re-install Office 2007, and I keep getting
stopped with an error message that says that the installation can not find
Proofing.en-us\Proof.es\Proof.cab, and, then, if I say skip it, the same
message but the suffix of the file or folder is .msi.

Doing s search on this file name, I found this same misery all over the
internet, even among people who went to a store and bought Office 2007 in a
box.

So, I need to get past this, to have the proofing tools, and to get an
installation.

Only then can I begin to look at Outlook.

I am told that I never needed to uninstall all of Office to uninstall
Outlook; but I looked for that option and could not find it.

I found the proofing tools for Office 2007. They are ,rar files. I put them
in their own folder on the C drive. Rar files are compressed. When I tried
to install Office 2007, and went to the folder location, Office 2007 still
refused them. Because they are compressed? Do I need to unzip them? I have a
..rar tool.

Let me know if I am on the right track, or what ever other steps I can take
to get Office 2007 working so that I can then try to get Outlook 2007 working.

In the meantime, I am using Office XP, where everything works except for
Outlook, which can access an Outlook Today folder list. If I could get that
fixed, I would be satisfied.

I cannot understand why everything one needs to install Office 2007 is not
on the installation disk.

I found the proofing tools for Office 2007. They are ,rar files. I

I think you're on your own and should experiment as you see fit. Normally,
everything you need to install an Office application will be on the install
disk and I've never experienced the proofing tools being missing.

O.K., Thanks.

First, if I mentioned OL97, I was in Error. I meant to say Outlook XP.

Where I am is that I was able to completely install Office XP, including
Outlook.
I first had to edit the registry and delete all references Outlook in Office
10 and Office 12.

I did see that the proofing tools at least for English are on my
installation disc. But they are in the Office 12 folder, and the install dose
not allow one to drill down. Apparently, one needs to save out the proofing
tools, what ever has been included, with the files AS FOLDERS.

I have not tried to do that yet, because, frankly, Office XP is fine for my
needs. In my other machines, where I have Offcie 2007, I save in the 97-2003
mode anyway.

I did not remove anything from the registry that was not necessary for me to
get Office XP going.

Should I find a reason to re-install Office 2007, I will spend the endless
time to first remove any trace of Office 2007 (Office 12) first.
