Missing application menu

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

My problem is that I accidentally deleted the standard menus that appear at the top of the spreadsheet (file, view, tools, edit, etc.) when trying to customize a toolbar. All I have showing are Excel, Window and Help at the top. I've seen this problem discussed here before, but I am not sure I understand how this problem is fixed and how to get to the customize toolbars window. BYW, I'm fairly new to Mac. Any help is appreciated.

Put your pointer directly on one of the vertical separators of a Toolbar,
Control/Right-Click & go into the Customize... dialog from there. Select the
Menu Bar by name then click the Reset button.

I have no toolbars showing. I can't even open a file. The only thing showing is Excel which shows underneath it: About Excel, Online Registration, Preferences (which doesn't allow me to get the menu back), Services, Hide Excel, Hide Others and Quit Excel. Then there is one next to it called Window which just allows me to minimize and zoom window. So at the top of my spreadsheet I have only Excel and Window. Thanks for any help.

You can barring other issues you can always open a file without using
toolbars or menus: Either double-click an Excel icon in a Finder window or
if the program is already running use Command+N to create a new file or
Command+O to get into the Open dialog to open an existing file. Also, if you
have an Excel icon in the Dock click it, or go to the Applications/Microsoft
Office 2008 folder & launch Excel directly... When you start fresh Excel
always generates a new blank workbook file.

But how do I get to a toolbar to click on the separator and do as you suggested earlier? I can't access any toolbars. When I open Excel, a new or existing spreadsheet comes up but still only has "Excel" and "Window" at the top (nothing else). Thanks.

Click the oblong button at the right end of the document window's title bar
to expand the toolbar display area.

Hi Bob,

I also erased my topmost menu. What's only left in the topmost bar is the Apple Logo, Excel and Script Menu. All the rest (file, edit, etc...) disappeared. I was able to do a temporary solution by adding customized menu on the toolbar but it's quite inconvenient. It's driving me nuts! If only I could email you a snapshot of my window so you can see what I mean.

With XL closed, delete the

~/LIbrary/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Excel Toolbars (12)

file.

Although John's solution is definitely one that should work it's pretty much
a "scorched earth policy" approach [No offense, John]:)... You'll also lose
any toolbar customizations if you do go that route.

If there are any concerns about that I'd first try going into the Customize
dialog, selecting the Workbook Menu Bar by name (highlight it) then click
the Reset button as described in my first reply to the OP of this
conversation. If you have any problem following the instructions given
throughout the thread be specific about what the problem is and be sure to
indicate what version of the program you're using.

For future reference, please don't tack your query onto an existing
conversation -- even if the problem "seems" to be the same. Follow the
suggestions offered & if they don't work for you your situation must be
different. Start a *NEW* message so the responders can focus on your issue.
