Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) It sounds ridiculous, but it's true! Under File, I only have "save" and "save as webpage" and under insert I do not have "insert footnotes". For a researcher this is pretty desastruous!

Also when I have a new document where I can press "save", then I'm not given the full option of all my folders and sub-folders. I can only store in the folders that were recently open.

Also: every time I start a word document the writing starts in subscript. Thus every time, I start writing I need to specify that I do not want subscript.

What's the problem at hand here?
a) office 2008 not compatible with mac 10.6.2?
b) my mac is stupid?
c) faulty CD?

The installation went alright.
The CD is fully legal.
My Mac is new.
And I can read and write.
Please please help me!
I have a ph.d. dissertation to write and am in my last year. I need word and if nobody can fix this on this forum I will buy a netbook with microsoft office for pcs on it. Never had problems with word before in my life!

Have you fully updated Office since installing? 12.2.4 is where it needs to
be. Run Check for Updates from the Help menu & accept all that is offered
before launching any of the Office apps.

Also, Snow Leopard has recently been updated to 10.6.3, so that needs to be
applied as well. I'd recommend that you go to the Apple Downloads site &
retrieve the COMBO updater: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

Run Apple's Disk Utility - Repair disk permissions after applying any
updates & shut down the Mac for a minute or two before starting it up again.

The issue with the Save dialog can more readily be remedied: Click the
button to the right of the 'Save As:' file name field to expand the dialog.

Cool! Many thanks! Am beginning to feel remotely competent and at ease with this Mac.

1) Have updated Microsoft Office to 12.2.4.

2) As for the Combo update: which one? Mac OS X v10.6.3 v1.1 Update (Combo) or Mac OS X Server 10.6.3 v1.1 Update (Combo)? Mine is a Mac OS extended 10.6.2

3) Will do the repair disk permissions after the combo download. Already found the thing! Didn't even know this thing existed. Do I have to do this thing every time I download something?

4) As for the missing buttons, "save as" and "footnote" has come back. But why did they ever disappear?

This has been helpful so far. Thanks!

Unless you administer multiple systems in a network environment with Macs as
file servers on that network you have no need for the Server versions of the
updates... In fact, they would probably balk if you try to apply them :)

Not really... In theory you shouldn't have to repair disk permissions at
all, but it isn't a perfect world. Running the routine helps make sure that
all is in order & 'reestablishes' any permissions that have gone awry. It's
just good preventive maintenance after installing updates to the OS or
updating/installing/removing major applications. It's also useful in
troubleshooting issues that arise because many are permissions-related &
'fixes' may not take properly if permissions are out of whack.
4) As for the missing buttons, "save as" and "footnote" has come back. But why
did they ever disappear?

Based on the complexity & sophistication of today's software combined with
its dependence on the OS any number of unexpected results can occur if they
aren't 'in sync' at all times. Keeping both OS X & your apps fully updated
is a necessity, not an option.
This has been helpful so far. Thanks!
