For a while now some commands in Excel 2004 haven't been available
(grayed out, that is) with my desktop. In the Edit menu in the
toolbar all the commands from Cut to Paste Special and Delete are
unavailable as are all the sub-commands under Clear (All, Formats,
Contents, Comments). Yet the right click and control-click in the
cell bring up all commands available there (Cut to Paste Special and
Clear, albeit in its abbreviated form, for instance). Just last night
a worksheet appeared to have some partly dead cells. I entered
numbers into the cells but couldn't change the format to Currency or
use the numbers successfully in a formula. Yet the cell immediately
below the list accepted the change in format and played its part in a
formula.
My computer: iMac g5 (2.0GHz Power PC), 20", 2gb RAM
OSX: 10.4.8
Excel (Office) 2004
Add-ins: Analysis ToolPak, Analysis ToolPak-VBA, FuncRes, and
ProcDBRes
I can't locate the trigger for this problem. At work I use a PC and
bring home spreadsheets written in Excel 2003. They don't seem to be
the source of the problem. Most of them are on my PowerBook too and
there Excel functions flawlessly, and in the cloned disk of my desk--
cloned after these problems had come to light--Excel has all its
functions too. I've deleted the preference files and followed the
advice concerning OpenBase Database at
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=49511&highlight=excel+2004.
And I've removed and reinstalled Excel. Excel displays the same
behavior when I log into my alternate account too. I've repaired
permissions with DiskUtility, run the maintenance scripts, cleaned all
caches, and corrected all files and directories with DiskWarrior, all
to no avail. Any advice? I've reached a dead end.
