Missing commands in Word

Hello. I'm using a MacBook Pro OS v. 10.4.9 and Word for Mac v. 11.3

Suddenly, I no longer have the option under the Insert tab to number
pages. Also, the option to open a new document has disappeared. I can
open a new document by clicking Command N, but there is no such option
under the tab. What's going on? Thank you.

First, make sure you didn't accidentally turn on "Word 5.1 Menus". Look
under View to see if there's a check next to that option, uncheck if so.
If that isn't the problem:

If you go to Tools | Customize Toolbars/Menus, select the Menu Bar, and
click Reset, it should set all your main menus and built-in toolbars
back to the default.

If you have customized your menus or toolbars, you may want to explore
the Tools | Customize, Commands dialog, and drag the commands you are
missing back to the toolbars/menus yourself, rather than wipe out your
customizations by clicking Reset.

Daiya, thank you. I'd never heard of "Word 5.1 Menus" but that was the
problem. Switched it off and everything else came back. Again, thank
you for your prompt and perfect reply.

Some time in the recent past you hit ctrl-5 or is it ctrl-8. It is the
Wor(l)d's most egregious keyboard shortcut. It toggles Word version 5
menus on and off. In Word 5 mode, among other things from Word's murky
past, you get no insert page numbers and no new file in the menu bar.

Toggles is the magic word. Hit it again and they come back!

Then, *run*, don't walk, to tools » customize » customize keyboard
choose all in categories, choose Word5Menus in commands, highlight
each current key and hit remove (savagely and with feeling)

When next you exit Word, you may be asked to save changes in your
normal template. Tell it Yes yes yes YES!!! ooh you are so-ooo good to
me!

You wouldn't believe how many people come here with your problem.
The help doesn't does it?

I think it's both, Elliott, but like you I re-configured my way out of the
problem long ago so can't confirm what the original commands were.

If anyone points out otherwise I'll change my entry in "Bend Word to Your
Will", which currently says:

Tools menu » Customize » Customize keyboard » under Categories, scroll to
"Window and help" » under Commands, scroll to Word5Menus » remove Control-5
and Control-8 from the "current keys".

Cheers,

Clive

Good recollection, gentlemen - it is in fact *both* that evoke the demon.
