Missing "Data Merge Manager"

M

Michelle

I've used the Data Merge Manager before--with various documents.

Now when I open a form document that I've created before, the Data
Merge Manager is checked--which means that it should be visible. But
it's nowhere to be seen.

Any idea how this can happen and how I can recover it? It's the oddest
thing. There were times when I used it before that I would move it to
the bottom of the screen (with mostly just the title bar showing) so
that I could work on what was below it in the Word document. But if I
left it there, it was always found in the same location that next time.

Now it seems to be completely gone.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

By the way, I'm using Microsoft Office 2004 on a Powerbook G4 running
OS 10.3.9.

Hi Michelle,

You mean that it's checked on the Tools menu but doesn't show anywhere on
the screen? If that's the case, maybe it got moved off the screen somehow
and that's where it stays.

In your System Preferences> Displays, try changing your screen resolution to
various other sizes (especially bigger, if you can) and see if it reappears.
If it does, drag it into the middle of the screen and return to your
original screen resolution.

Also, try the various views from the Window menu and see if that makes it
reappear.

Post back if nothing helps.

I tried all of those options already--none worked. I found another
thread related to this problem--it sounds like it's occurred to a
number of other Word users. I'll keep trying to work my way through
those ideas also. I'm REALLY hoping that I won't have to do an
uninstall/reinstall. I have WAY too many things already set in Word
and Entourage.

If you have any other specific ideas (other than my last option above),
please let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Just to clarify--these are a few things that I've tried:

*changing the Normal template to oldnormal and creating new normal
template.

*repair permissions

*reset toolbars

*changing resolutions

*changing window views

None of these have worked.

If you create a new doc, and try to call the Data Merge Manager, does it
show up? You first mentioned the problem with opening already-merged
documents.

Hold off on the remove and reinstall. I think you should be able to tweak
these instructions, which will be worth trying. If you are familiar with
VBA, it should be a simple matter of substituting one name for another--I'll
try some testing.

I used the applescript in the link and replaced "data merge manager"
for "formatting palette".

IT WORKED!!!

Thank you SO MUCH!!! This script fixed it SO EASILY--where other
methods completely failed. Thanks.
