Missing Deleted Items after Outlook Express Upgrade

I upgraded my brother's machine from Internet Explorer 4.0
to version 6. His Outlook Express was also upgraded. He
now tells me that the items he has been saving in
his "deleted items" folder for years are gone. Is there
any way to retrieve these messages?
