Missing Dialogue Box

When I used to open Word (I think 2003), there was a dialogue box that
appeared on the right side of the page/window. It contained a file short
cut menu, allowing me to open previously accessed documents and templates.
It doesn't appear automatically anymore when I open Word. I'm not sure what
the name of this shortcut box is or how I can get it to reappear. Does
anyone know?

Try Ctrl-F1 or go to View-->Task pane

I don't know how to get it to appear religiously. Or secularly, either.
